About the think tank

Climate change, housing shortages, the corona pandemic: many of the great challenges our society faces were foreseeable. But we proved unable to adequately anticipate them. In practice, the short term rules more often than we would like. This worries us. And we want to do something about it. That is why The Argumentation Factory together with Arjen Gielen is establishing the Think Tank Longtermism.

The plan

The think tank is the place where a broad group of stakeholders interact - officials and politicians, but also researchers, youth organisations, journalists, entrepreneurs, and many more. We will analyze why things often go wrong and short term concerns often prevail. But above all we want to flesh out what we can do about this. From citizen councils on future issues to a ministry for the Future - there is no shortage of good ideas. We are going to collect, weigh and market these ideas. Under the motto: think long-term, act now.

The first phase of the think tank will run from June 2023 to September 2024. In this period, we will hold about ten meetings with the think tank core team. In addition, we will organize as many expert sessions. In between these sessions, we plan to publish our intermediate results in the media, on our website and on LinkedIn, and engage in further discussions with interested parties.

The participants

The Think Tank Longtermism is an independent think tank initiated by The Argumentation Factory and Arjen Gielen. The think tank is comprised of a core team of eight ministries, the three planning agencies, a number of semi-public institutions, civil society actors and experts who participate in their own capacity. The core team members endorse the importance of the think tank and contribute ideas during the sessions. Some of these parties also contribute with funding. The think tank itself is independent and the author of all results.

The core team includes the following persons and organizations:
